HUNTSVILLE - Freshman running backs Joe Rauls and Adrian Thomas combined to rush for 201 yards and junior quarterback Albert Bradley passed for 151 yards and two touchdowns as Sam Houston held off a determined Angelo State Rams squad that was ranked 18th nationally in NCAA Division II for a 27-26 season-opening victory.
Trailing 27-13 with 10:41 to play, the Rams scored two late touchdowns to have an opportunity to tie the game with 3:52 left. But Marc Levens' point after the attempt bounced off the right goal post and the Kats hung on for the victory.
Major concerns after the game included a minus three turnover ratio (two interceptions and two lost fumbles for the Kat offense) and an ankle injury to Bradley on the to last offensive play of the game.
There were many bright spots. Rauls carried 21 times for 111 yards and Thomas added 11 carries for 90 yards including touchdowns of 5 and 37 yards. Larry Nixon caught 4 passes for 47 yards and a touchdown and Matt Dominguez has 3 catches for 44 yards and a TD. The Bearkat defense allowed the Rams only 223 total yards and allowed Angelo to convert only 2 of 16 third downs. Marcus Parks led the defense with 11 tackles. Defensive lineman William Roberts had four tackles for losses. Punter Ryan Klaus earned Southland Football League "Special Teams Player of the Week" honors after averaging 49.3 yards per punt on eight punts including a 62-yard punt and one that rolled dead on the three yard line.
