Bearkats take Battle of Piney Woods in a blow out

NACOGDOCHES ? The Kats trip to Nacogdoches was the same as the last four have been, a victory. Sam Houston State beat rival Stephen F. Austin 45-17 on Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium for the fourth straight win in the series. It is also the fifth straight in Nacogdoches.

Chris Poullard got things going for the Kats in the first half running in from nine to put SHSU up 7-0. After forcing an SFA punt, Poullard found himself in the end zone again, this time on a five-yard scamper.

The second quarter was Bomar's turn to get into the end zone. He scored on runs of 10 yards each to give the Kats 28 first-half points. And a 28-3 first-half lead. Bomar passed for 251 yards and was the team's leading rusher with 67 yards.

The Kats didn't let up in the second half, scoring on the opening drive of half, when Poullard scored from 10-yards out giving SHSU a 35-3 lead. Poullard finished the game with 67 yards rushing on 17 carries and added another 37 receiving on just four catches.

Just for good measure, Carlton Cobey scored the first defensive touchdown of the season for the Kats when he intercepted a pass from back-up quarterback Jeremy Claybon and took it 56 yards for the sixth touchdown of the game.

Taylor Wilkins added a 19-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for the final points of the game for the Kats.

For the game, SHSU finished with 400 yards of total offense, racking up 149 of that on the ground.
