Kat men open season with 86-69 victory over Dallas Baptist

HUNTSVILLE ? James Barrett and Reggie Rawlins scored 14 points to lead Sam Houston State to an 86-69 non-conference men's basketball victory over Dallas Baptist Saturday night in the season opener for the Bearkats.
Ryan Bright, Shamir McDaniel, and Jeremy Thomas also were in double figures for the Kats, each scoring 13 points. Bright was the game's top rebounder with 11 boards.
Sam Houston State jumped out to a quick 11 point lead as Barkley Falkner's free throw put the Kats up 13-2 six minutes into the game.
Nick Michaels, who led Dallas Baptist with 21 points, cut the margin to five points, 35-30, with a three point field goal five seconds before intermission. Michaels' field goal to start the second half brought the Patriots within three points, 35-32.
Sam Houston then went on a 14-6 run to go back in front by 11, 49-38, with 14:34 to play. The Bearkats' largest lead of the game was 19 points, 86-67.
Sam Houston out rebounder the Patriots 44-32. The Bearkats shot 47.1 per cent from the field, hitting 33 of 70 with eight three point baskets.
Sam Houston will play host to Texas Tech of the Big 12 Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
