SAN MARCOS - Senior quarterback Brett Hicks couldn't have scripted a better way to end his college career. Starting just his second game of the season, Hicks engineered an 18-point come from behind victory to knock off Texas State 29-28 on Thursday night.
Facing a fourth-and-goal from the Texas State, 5-yard line, Hicks completed a pass to Chris Lucas for a score with just 13 clicks left on the clock. Taylor Wilkins converted the extra point to give the Kats a 29-28 victory. On the ensuing kickoff, the Bobcats coughed up the ball and Stanley Garrett fell on it, ending any chance of a Bobcat comeback.
The Bobcats seemingly took control of the game in the third quarter, taking advantage of a Brett Hicks interception while posting a pair of touchdowns in the quarter to put Texas State up 28-10. Another interception by Hicks in the fourth quarter looked like the Bobcats might put the game away, but Byran Richmond got it right back on a pick of his own. He returned it to the Bobcat 41-yard line.
Six plays later Poullard was in the in the end zone. The two-point conversion failed and the Kats were 28-16. A penalty on the following kickoff backed the Bobcats up at their own eight-yard line and the defense stepped up again. Jerrod Brown intercepted a pass and returned it down to the Texas State 1. It took just one play for the Kats to get back in the end zone on Poullard's third rushing touchdown on the night.
The Bearkat defense then held the Bobcats and forced a punt to get the ball back with 2:47 left to play in the game and 80 yards of field to work with. The Kats faced just two third-down plays on the drive, with Hicks completing the first to Catron Houston for an 8-yard pick up and a first down.
They did face third down again until it was third-and-goal. Hicks pass was incomplete to Houston setting up the fourth-down scoring play to Lucas. Hicks finished the night 23-of-43 for 262 yards.
With the win, the Kats finish the season with a five-game winning streak and move to 5-2 in Southland Conference play.
It was also a career night for Poullard. He picked up 114 yards on the night making him the seventh player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards. He finished the game with 1,038 yards for the season, moving him past McNeil Moore (1,014) on the all-time list for sixth. He also finished the season with 13 touchdowns, which places him fourth on the single season list.
