Volleyball falls twice on South Texas road trip

Sam Houston State lost two five-game matches on a Southland Conference road trip to South Texas this weekend, falling 19-30 30-17 28-30 30-27 15-12 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday night and 25-30 20-30 30-26 30-28 15-13 to Texas-San Antonio Saturday afternoon.

 

Cynthia Yarotsky led the Bearkats in kills in both matches with 17 at Corpus Christi and 18 at Texas-San Antonio. 

 

Kendra Rowlings led UTSA Saturday with 18 kills including the winning point  for the Roadrunners in the fifth game. Down two games to none, the Roadrunners came back to win the final three for the victory. 

 

Sam Houston held a 12-11 lead in the fifth, but the Roadrunners run four of the next five points to take the match. 

 

Kasey McBrearty posted 18 kills including two big points in the final moments of the match as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi handed wonThursday night.

 

Brittanie Wallace added 16 kills in the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi match and 11 at UTSA. Katie Phillips also posted double figure kills at UTSA with 13.

 

The two losses dropped Sam Houston to 11-16 for the season and 5-9 in Southland Conference action. The Bearkats will complete the regular season Friday and Saturday at Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville against Texas State-San Marcos and Texas-Arlington.

 

Sam Houston started strong the TAMUCC match strong. With the score tied 9-9, the Kats jumped out to a 17-11 lead and won the game easily 30-19 with 12 kills and only five errors in 25 attempts.

 

But the Islanders roared back to win the second game 30-17. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had only four errors in 40 attempts during the second game with 16 kills.

 

Each of the final three games were battles. The third stanza was tied seven times, the last tie at 28-28. Launa McClung's kill and an ace by Yarotsky set up game point for the Kats as Amber Benjamin's error gave SHSU a 30-28 margin.

 

With the fourth game tied at 26-26, two errors by the Bearkats put the Islanders up 28-26 and TAMUCC won two of the next three points to bring on the decisive fifth game.

 

After three ties, the last at 11-11, McBrearty accounted for two points with kills as Corpus Christi won four of the next five points for the victory.

 

Sam Houston State will complete its two-game South Texas SLC road swing Saturday with a match at Texas-San Antonio at 2 p.m. The Bearkats close out the 2007 regular season on Nov. 9 and 10 with home matches against Texas State-San Marcos and Texas-Arlington.
