
Women's basketball falls 81-65 in exhibition

Lydia Gonzales scored 16 points and Brittany Brooks added 15 to lead the Sam Houston State women's basketball team as the Bearkats fell to Tarleton State 81-65 in a pre-season exhibition game Sunday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
Tarleton State, a member of the Lone Star Conference, shot 52.5 per cent from the floor, netting 31 of their 59 shots including nine of 16 three point attempts. The TexAnns had five players in double figures with Kendal Reddell and D'Anna Dingler leading the team with 15 points apiece.
Sam Houston hit a respectable 41 per cent from the field, going 25 for 61. Ausha Hartley also scored in double figures for the Bearkats with 10 points.
The exhibition was close early with five lead changes and two ties in the first 12 minutes of the game. The Bearkats jumped out to a five-point lead, 14-9 on consecutive fast break lay-ups by Whitney Smith, Hartley, and Bennett.
The TexAnns went on an 9-0 run to build an 18-14 lead. After Hartley tied the game 20-20 with a layup at 7:20, Meagan Curtis hit a jumper to give Tarleton the lead for good. The TexAnns went on a 17-7 run to build an 11-point lead and led at halftime 40-35.
Tarleton came out hot in the second half, building a 53-37 lead and the Bearkats never cut the margin to less than 13 the rest of the way.
Sam Houston outrebounded Tarleton State 34-32. Gonzales led the Kats with six boards. Hartley led SHSU with six assists.
Sam Houston State will open the 2007-08 regular season on the road Friday, Nov. 4, against Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The Bearkat women play their first home game on Thursday, Nov. 15, when they host North Texas.
