Cynthia Yarotsky earns Southland defensive honor

HUNTSVILLE -- Senior outside hitter Cynthia Yarotsky had a match for the books in her last home appearance at Johnson Coliseum Saturday in a five-game Bearkat volleyball loss to Texas-Arlington.
The performance earned Yarotsky Southland Conference volleyball "Defensive Player of the Week" honors.
Yarotsky totaled 18 kills and accounted for 39 digs, the second highest single match total in Bearkat history. Only Emily Orlowski, who totaled 43 digs against the UTA Mavericks in 2004, had more digs in one SHSU match.
The honor marked Yarotsky's second Southland "Player of the Week" award this season. During September, she was named as Southland Conference "Offensive Player of the Week" after leading the Kats to wins over Northwestern State and Central Arkansas.
Texas-Arlington won Saturday's match 30-28 26-30 30-18 27-30 15-12 but the Bearkats showed they have upset potential in next week's Southland Conference post-season tournament in San Antonio where they will face one of the top two seeds in the first round Friday.
Four other Sam Houston players totaled double digit kills with Brittanie Wallace knocking down 21 and Sarah Hazelwood, Launa McClung, and Katie Phillips adding 16, 13, and 10 kills, respectively.
Bianca Sauls led UTA with 25 kills. The match was tied 24 times with 14 lead changes in a see-saw affair that saw Sam Houston total 82 kills and UTA 71.
Texas-Arlington ends the regular season with a 19-10 mark and a 12-4 Southland record. The Bearkats end 11-18 for the y ear and 5-11 in league action.
Friday, led by Lawrencia Brown, who totaled 20 kills in 50 attempts, Texas State-San Marcos defeated Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference volleyball match Friday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Cynthia Yarotsky and Launa McClung led Sam Houston (11-17, SLC 5-10) with 11 kills apiece. Brittanie Wallace added 10. The Bearkats totaled 55 kills. Texas State-San Marcos (17-10, SLC 10-6) had 62 kills.
Sam Houston started strong, winning a tight first game 30-28. The first game was tied 15 times. At 27-27, Yarotsky, McClung, and Wallace each had kills as the Bearkats won three of the last four points. Sam Houston had 22 kills in 51 attempts during the game.
But the Bobcats came back strong, winning the next three games with virtually error free volleyball. Texas State-San Marcos had only 16 errors in 166 attempts for the night. Sam Houston, however, had 27 attack errors, eight service erroes and 11 ball handling errors.
