HUNTSVILLE -- Josten Crow, 6-4, 205 pound guard who played a year ago for Spring Westfield High School and this past season for Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI, has signed a letter of intent to play men's basketball for Sam Houston State and head coach Bob Marlin.
Crow led Westfield to a 36-1 record in 2006, reaching the regional semifinals after earning national rankings as high as No. 2. He was a two-time first team All-District selection, averaging 9.1 points and 7.2 rebounds and shooting 59 percent from the floor.
At Naval Academy Prep School this season, he averaged 22.2 points, 6.1 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per contest.
"Josten is a versatile player who can play two or three positions well," Marlin said. "He is a solid player and a good defender who is going to be a good four-year corps player for us. We really liked him a year ago when he was a senior at Westfield but didn't have a scholarship available at his position. It's worked out well now that he wants to return to Texas. We're excited to sign him."
Sam Houston State expects to sign at least one more recruit during the spring signing period.
Last fall during the early signing period, the Bearkats inked Arthur Zulu, a 6-8, 215 forward/center from Jacksonville College, and Ryan Bennett, a 6-0, 170 guard from McLennan Community College.
As a freshman in 2005-06, Zulu averaged 7.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and shot 55 per cent from the field for Jacksonville and head coach Greg Young. Zulu is from Lusaka, Zambia.
"Arthur has been is in his second year in the United States and is continuing to learn our game," Marlin said. "He had an excellent freshman season last year. He is increasing his fundamental skills and is expected to have a big sophomore season for Jacksonville. He is a strong, athletic player who is quick off his feet and is a good rebounder."
Bennett, who replaced current Bearkat point guard Jejuan Plair at McLennan Community College last year, averaged 9.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists for Coach Kevin Gill during the 2005-06 season. Bennett shoot 41 per cent from three point range and 77 per cent from the free throw line. He helped lead McLennan to a 23-9 record and the North Texas Junior College Conference title.
An All-State, All-Region, and All-District 7-4A selection at Eastern Hills High School in Fort Worth for Coach Felley Donaldson, Bennett averaged 33.1 points and 6.2 assists as a senior. He was named as Tarrant County "Player of the Year" in 2005.
"Ryan is a combo guard who can score. He is an excellent defender and a fiery competitor," Marlin said. "Both Arthur and Ryan are planning on majoring in business."
