Five Bearkats receive Academic All-SLC Honors

Five members of Sam Houston State's 2006 Southland Conference champion outdoor track and field teams have been named to the 2006 Academic All-Southland Conference honor squad.
Clint Blinka, Randy Flach, and Dustin Joubert of the men's team and Chaterra Blake and Tara Tyler from the women's squad all were honored.
Sam Houston State led all schools in total selections with five. Stephen F. Austin State had four student-athletes named Academic All-Conference, followed by Texas State-San Marcos, Texas-San Antonio, and Louisiana-Monroe with three each, and Texas-Arlington, Northwestern State, McNeese State, and Lamar with two each.
No other team in the league had five players on the Academic All-SLC team. Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana-Monroe, each with two honorees, were the only other squads with mulitiple honorees. The academic all-conference team honors student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. The team is selected by vote of head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators.
Joubert, a sophomore from Coppell, was the only athlete with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average on either the men's or women's Southland Conference All Academic team. He earned All-Southland Conference in cross country with 10th place individual finish at 2005 meet.
Blinka, a graduate student from Export, PA., with a 3.83 grade point average majoring in kinesiology, was an NCAA Regional Qualifier in pole vault (16' 6.75”) and placed 6th in pole vault and 7th in the decathlon at 2006 Southland outdoor meet.
Flach, a senior from Center Point with a 3.71 grade point average majoring in Kinesiology, was an NCAA Regional Qualifier in pole vault (17' 4.5”) and placed fourth in the pole gault at the 2006 Southland Conference Outdoor meet.
Blake, a senior from Houston with a 3.19 grade point average majoring in finance, was an NCAA regional qualifier in 100m hurdles with a school record mark of 13.62. She won the Southland Conference indoor championship in 60 meter hurdles with a school record time of 8.42.
Tyler, a sophomore from Mansfield with a 3.23 grade point average majoring in biology was an NCAA regional qualifier in 100m hurdles (13.68) and the 4x100 relay (45.68). She earned All-Southland Conference in two events outdoors in 2005, finishing as the runner-up in SLC 100 meter hurdles (13.74) and 4x100 relay (45.68).
