HUNTSVILLE - Alison Oakland and
Luana Miessa scored goals in the 80th and 84th minute to give Sam Houston State a 2-1 lead, but Louisiana came back to score on a penalty kick with 15 seconds to play in regulation to force overtime and Chelsea Balestra knocked in the game winner seven minutes into extra time as the Ragin' Cajuns defeated SHSU 3-2 at Pritchett Field Sunday afternoon.
Callie Oliver gave the Cajuns a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal from the left side four minutes before the intermission. Oakland tied the game after a steal in front of the UL goal, scoring at 80:35. Miessa took a pass from Tofi Chavez to put the Bearkats up 2-1 four minutes later.
But, in the final 30 seconds of play, the Bearkats were called for a trip in the penalty area. Lynch right footed the ball into the upper left hand corner of the goal to force overtime.
A pass down the wing from Oliver found Baleshia open for the game winner in the 97th minute.
"The girls played hard and looked like they had it one, but they made a mistake right at the end that cost us," Sam Houston head coach Marcia Oliveira said. "There's some luck in this game and today we were unlucky. We'll need to learn from this."
Louisiana out shot the Bearkats 25-14 with SHSU goalkeeper Jenny Pence making 11 saves.
Next action for the Bearkats will be Friday, Sept. 7, when Sam Houston travels to Houston to face the Cougars at 7 p.m. The Kats return home to Pritchett Field Sunday, Sept. 9, to face Texas Southern at 1 p.m.
