Sam Houston State women fall to UTA in Arlington

ARLINGTON - Sam  Houston State remained winless in Southland Conference action with a 97-53 loss to the Mavericks.

The Bearkats had two players in double figures scoring with Brittany Brooks leading the way with 17 points. Whittney Smith added 11. For the basketball game, the Kats shot 28.8 percent from the field, hitting 17-of-59 from the floor.

The biggest difference in the game however was on the inside. The Bearkats were outrebounded 64-28. The Mavericks also pulled down 28 offensive rebounds to just eight for the Kats.

UTA outscored Sam Houston 50-6 in the paint. The offensive rebounds accounted for 32 second chance points. The Mavs were led in scoring by Candice Champion with 26 points, Meghan Nelson with 15, and Tiffeny Riles with 12. Erin Dixon led UTA with 14 rebounds while Riles added 11. Lydia Gonzales pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Bearkats.

Texas-Arlington, defending Southland Conference women's basketball champions, upped their record for the season to 11-7. The Mavericks are tied for first place in the SLC West with Texas State-San Marcos. Both teams have identical 6-1 league marks.

WIth the loss, the Bearkats fall to 0-6 in Southland Conference play and 1-18 overall.

The Bearkats will remain on the road, taking on Texas State-Sam Marcos on Saturday. That game will get started at 2 p.m. as part of a double header with the men. The women's game will be broadcast live on KHVL Oldies Radio 1490 AM.

The Kats will return home on Feb. 7 when they host Texas-San Antonio.
