The Sam Houston State volleyball will seek to start a new winning streak Saturday night when they host Nicholls State for the Kats' annual homecoming volleyball match at Johnson Coliseum.
Saturday has been designated as "Dig for the Cure" night at Johnson Coliseum. Bearkat volleyball fans can pledge an amount to breast cancer research per dig and after the game based on the number of digs, the donated amount and can be figured up.
"We hope as many fans as possible will come to the match to support the girls and also pledge a dollar amount for each dig the team compiles," SHSU head coach Brenda Gray said. "The money raised will go for breast cancer research, a disease that has touched everyone in one way or another."
The volleyball team saw its three-match Southland Conference winning streak end Tuesday night with a five-set loss at Southeastern Louisiana. Sam Houston held a two sets to one lead Tuesday but could not put the Lions away.
"It was a disappointing loss and a tough trip home from Hammond," Gray said. "But we're back in our house this weekend with a chance to turn things back around."
Anna Ferguson and Haley Thomas continue to lead the Bearkat attack. Ferguson has totaled 207 kills and Thomas 202 in 22 matches this year. The pair also lead Sam Houston State in blocks. Thomas has 71 blocks this season and Ferguson 55.
