Soccer wins at Central Arkansas 3-1

CONWAY, AR ? Goals by Raquel Bueno in the 13th and 24th minutes of the first half helped Sam Houston State get back on the winning track with a 3-1 Southland Conference women's soccer victory over Central Arkansas Sunday afternoon at Bear Soccer Complex.

Bueno opened the scoring at the 13:10 with a point blank shot after a give-and-go pass from Luana Miessa. Nine minutes later, at 24:14, Bueno scored past a charging goalkeeper to put the Bearkats up 2-0.

Central Arkansas cut the margin to 2-1 at the 56:48 mark in the second half as Aly Murray scored on a breakaway.

But Miessa got an insurance goal on a pass from April Lozano to put Sam Houston up 3-1 at 67:22.

The victory ended a four-match losing streak and upped the Bearkats season record to 8-6. The eight victories stand as the most in any season in the six-year history of the Sam Houston State program. The Kats are 3-4 in Southland Conference action.

Central Arkansas dropped to 3-10-1 for the year and 1-5-1 in league play.

The Bears took twice as many shots as Sam Houston, totaled 15 shots to the Kats' seven. But SHSU goalkeeper Jenny Pence save four of the shots and 10 were wide or high.

Sam Houston State returns home for its final two regular season matches of the season next weekend. The Bearkats play host to McNeese State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Lamar Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Bearkats are seeking to be one of the six teams to earn a berth in the Southland Conference post-season tournament which begins Thursday, Nov. 6, at Lake Charles, LA.
