Soccer tops Lions to extend win streak to seven

HAMMOND, LA ? April Lozano scored in the 64th minute on a pass from Luana Miessa to give Sam Houston State a 1-0 Southland Conference women's soccer victory over Southeastern Louisiana Sunday afternoon.

The victory extended the Bearkats' school record winning streak to seven matches.

Sam Houston's 7-2 record represents not only the best start in the six- year history of the program but the most victories in one season for the Kat soccer team. Last year's squad went 6-11 on the way to a sixth place Southland finish.

The Bearkats have never before started conference play with a 2-0 record.

“The team is very excited about this win,” head coach Tom Brown said. “This was a big road win for us.”

Sam Houston defeated Nicholls State Friday night in Thibodaux, giving the Kats a Southland Conference road weekend sweep.

“To start off conference play with a pair of victories is huge,” Brown said. “We picked up the goal in the second half and then just defended like crazy to hold on to the lead.”

The Bearkats were credited with only three shots while Southeastern Louisiana attempted 10.

Each of Sam Houston's seven victories in the winning streak have been shutouts. The Bearkat defense has now gone 659 minutes without giving up a goal.

Sam Houston State returns home next weekend to host Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. on Friday at Pritchett Field.
