Haley Thomas named SLC Defensive Player of Week

Haley Thomas, senior middle blocker for Sam Houston State from Jewett, Texas, has been named as Southland Conference volleyball "Defensive Player of the Week."

Thomas led Sam Hosuton to victories over tournament bound teams Lamar and Northwestern State. The Lamar win marked the third time this year Sam Houston has defeated a team that came into the match in first place in its division. Thomas recorded 12 blocks against Central Arkansas and eight in the victory over Lamar.

The senior stands as the Bearkats' second-leading scorer for the 2008 season with 284 kills and 106 blocks.

Sam Houston State has earned the No. 5 seed at the Southland Conference post-season tournament with a 9-7 league mark. The Bearkats will take on host team Stephen F. Austin in the tournament's first round at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Nacogdoches.
