The Sam Houston State men's basketball team attempts to get back on the winning track Saturday night when the Bearkats play host to Wright State at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum.
Although winless in their first three games of the 2008-09 season, the Raiders bring a strong winning tradition into the contest. Wright State earned a berth in the NCAA tournament in 2006-07 with a school record 23 victories after winning the Horizon League title. Last season coach Brad Brownell led Wright State to a 21-10 mark.
Vaughn Duggins, a 6-3 guard, leads the Raiders with 10.3 points per game. Cory Cooperwood, a 6-7 forward, adds 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest.
Wright State lost 69-61 to Illinois State, 70-68 in overtime to Central Michigan and 55-37 to Miami in its first three outings.
Sam Houston State stands 1-3 for the year. The Bearkats battled from 15 points down in the first half to tie their game with Western Michigan Tuesday night 62-62 with 22 seconds left. But a three-point basket with eight ticks remaining allowed the Broncos to leave Johnson Coliseum with a 65-62 win.
Guard Corey Allmond, a 6-1 transfer from Howard College, leads the Bearkats with 17.3 points per game. Senior forward DeLuis Ramirez is adding 11.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest. Point guard Ashton Mitchell leads the Southland Conference in assists this season with 7.2 per game.
The Wright State contest completes a three-game home stand for the Bearkats. Sam Houston fell to North Texas 76-71 in the first contest in the stand. Sam Houston won its opener with Schreiner College 100-42, then lost in Lubbock to Texas Tech 87-76.
Following the Wright State matchup, Sam Houston State will travel to Denton for a rematch with North Texas on Wednesday, Dec. 3, then face UTEP in El Paso on Saturday, Dec. 6.
