Texas A&M, ranked number two in NCAA Divsion I softball blanked Sam Houston State 6-0 Wednesday afternoon in College Station as the Bearkats took their first loss of the 2008 season.
Amanda Scarborough struck out five and walked one as she faced 22 Bearkat batters. Hailey Wiginton was the only Sam Houston player to get on base as she walked in the first inning.
Brandi Crnkovic (1-1) took the loss for Sam Houston, pitching the first three-and-one-third innings. Crnkovic struck out three Aggie batters including one with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first inning.
Crnkovic and the SHSU defense held the Aggies scoreless for three innings, but A&M exploded for five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Morgan Mikulin pitched the final two and two thirds innings in relief.
Sam Houston State fell to 2-1 for the season. The Aggies stand 5-1.
Sam Houston State returns home to play a doubleheader with North Texas at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Bearkat Softball Stadium.
