COLLEGE STATION ? Whitney Wilson went 3-for-4 at the plate and Brandi Crnkovic picked up her fourth shutout of the season in the pitching circle as Sam Houston State defeated Temple 5-0 at the Texas A&M Invitational Sunday morning.
The victory upped Sam Houston State's season mark to 6-4. The Bearkats will begin Southland Conference action Tuesday and Wednesday with a three-game series at Stephen F. Austin.
Crnkovic spread five hits over seven innings, striking out six Temple batters. The junior is 4-2 for the season.
Wilson started the scoring for Sam Houston in the third inning, leading off with a double to right field. Morgan Mikulin was safe on an error, then Mandy Huckabee brought in the first Bearkat run with a single.
Lauren Burns hit a two-run single to give SHSU a 3-0 lead.
The scoring continued in the fourth inning with Hailey Wiginton leading off with a bunt single, Amy Brown moving her to second with a sacrifice bunt and Wiginton reached third on a single by Wilson. In a designated player role instead of pitching, Morgan Mikulin singled in a run and Wilson scored on a passed ball.
Sam Houston compiled a 2-3 record at the Texas A&M Invitational, defeating North Texas in their opening game of the tournament, then losing three close games to Texas A&M, Temple, and North Texas before Sunday's win.
