HUNTSVILLE ? Morgan Mikulin hit a home run and the game winning single in a 5-4 Sam Houston State victory in the first game of a Southland Conference softball doubleheader against Texas-Arlington, then got the pitching victory and had two more RBIs in a 6-5 Bearkat victory in the nightcap Saturday at Bearkat Softball Stadium.
The softball team couldn't repeat the magic on Sunday, however, falling 9-2.
The series victory ups Sam Houston State's record for the season to 18-17 and 9-6 in Southland Conference play. UTA falls to 13-16 for the year and 9-9 in the league
Brandi Crnkovic (8-10) limited the Mavericks to five hits while striking out seven batters to get the victory in the pitching circle for Sam Houston State. Crnkovic also picked up her third save of the season, throwing the final two innings of the second game.
Mikulin 3-for-8 with 4 RBIs during the doubleheader. She upped her season pitching record to 10-7, spreading nine hits over five innings while striking out two batters.
Sam Houston State totaled nine hits. Heather Fortenberry was the losing pitcher for UTA in relief.
Hailey Wiginton's two-run blast and Mikulins solo home run put Sam Houston up 3-0 in the third inning of the first game. Texas-Arlington scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game 4-4.
Wiginton singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, reached second on a sacrifice, and scored on Mikulin's single to right field for the game winner.
Sam Houston State totaled 10 hits in the nightcap with Sarah Parich and Kendra Spivey each adding an RBI.
Texas-Arlington totaled 11 hits Sunday in the third and final game of the series for a 9-2 victory.
Heather Fortenberry led the Mavericks at the plate, going 3-for-4. Rebecca Collom was 2-for-4 with a home run.
UTA pitcher Cara Hulme limited the Bearkats to nine hits and struck out six batters for the victory in the circle.
Brandi Crnkovic started for Sam Houston and drew the loss. She gave up six hits in four and two-thirds innings while striking out three. Mikulin pitched the finals two and a third innings,
UTA and SHSU will meet in the third and final game of the three-game Southland softball series Sunday at 1 p.m.
