Softball sweeps Nicholls State

HUNTSVILLE ?  Hailey Wiginton went 3-for-3 at the plate to drive in three runs to lead Sam Houston State to a 7-1 victory over Nicholls State as the Bearkats picked up a Southland Conference series sweep over the Colonels Sunday afternoon.

 

Nicholls State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Danielle Clayton singled with two out, then Audrey Wood doubled for the RBI.

 

Sam Houston finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Sarah Parich and Kendra Spivey hit back to back singles and Hailey Wiginton doubled both in for a 2-1 Bearkat lead.

 

A two-run double by Wiginton and a two-run single by Casie Everitt's sparked a five-run sixth inning as Sam Houston extended its lead to 7-1.

 

Brandi Crnkovic (15-14) was the winning pitcher for the Bearkats, giving up only two hits in four innings and striking out three batters. Morgan Mikulin pitched the final three innings, picking up her second save of the season.

 

Sam Houston moved up into fifth place in the Southland Conference standings with the sweep. The Bearkats stand 29-25 for the year and 14-10 in league action.

 

Nicholls State dropped to 25-25 for the year and 12-12 in Southland play.
