
Bearkat women sign junior college post

Therese Hager, a 6-0 post from Oslo, Norway, has signed a letter of intent to attend Sam Houston State and play women's basketball for head coach Brenda Nichols.
She played at the highest competitive club level in Norway and was a member of the Norweign National Team. She was selected to multiple All-Star Teams prior to coming to the States.
“Therese brings experience not only in junior college but internationally as well,” Nichols said. “She is extremely active inside, can score, defends well, and rebounds hard. You know what you are getting with a player that has international experience and Therese is no different. We really feel we got a sleeper here, she will be a steal.”
Hager led Independence Community College to a 24-9 overall record and a 15-3 mark in conference this season. She played her junior college ball for coach Tony Turner.
Hager joins Granbury's Micalyn Slemmons and early signees Mary Beth Renz of Oklahoma City, Bre Agnew of Nacogdoches, and Britni Martin of Conroe as members of the incoming class this fall
Slemmons was a four-year starter at Granbury for coach Leta Andrews, the nation's winningest high school women's basketball coach. She led the Fort Worth area in assists and steals both as a junior and a senior.
Granbury made three consecutive state playoff appearances including a 28-7 record this past season as district champions.
“We are excited to have Micalyn continue her career here at Sam Houston,” Nichols said. “She is a tough, hard-nosed player that comes from a top-notch program. She makes everyone around her better. She has the ability to make big plays and big shots. Playing in such a disciplined and structured system in high school will pay off immediately at our level.”
Slemmons was a three-time All-District selection. Slemmons averaged 13.1 points, 5.3 assists, 5.5 steals, and 4.2 rebounds per game as a senior.
“Micalyn plays like she is six foot [tall],” Andrews said. “She loves the game, and if you are going to battle, she is definitely one you want on your side.”
Slemmons also received Academic All-State honors as a senior and Academic All-District honors all four years of high school.
Mary Beth Renz of Bishop McGuinness High School in Oklahoma City, OK, a 5-11 guard, is a three-time Class 4A all-state selection who averaged 18.1 points and 5.2 rebounds as a junior in 2007. She is rated among the top 35 players in Oklahoma and is a nominee for McDonald's high school All-America honors this season. He averaged 19.5 points as a sophomore and 14.2 points as a freshman.
Renz was selected to the 2007 Junior Olympic team that placed second in the nation and led her AAU team, the Tulsa Swoosh, to two Oklahoma AAU championships in three seasons. She is an honor student with a 3.833 grade point average.
Britni Martin of Conroe High School is a McDonald's All-America nominee who is averaging 17.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 7.6 assists this season. She is the team captain of the No. 13 ranked Conroe Tigers.
As a junior in 2006-07, Martin was an All-Region selection. She has been an All-District performer both as a sophomore and a junior and was District "Newcomer of the Year" as a freshman. She is a three-year Academic All-District honoree and a member of the National Honor Society.
Agnew is a 6-2 senior for Nacogdoches High School who averaged 17.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game as a junior. She was named District "Most Valuable Player" in 2007. So far this year, she is averaging 16.1 points and 15.2 rebounds per contest including a recent 34-point, 25-rebound outburst against Kirbyville Nov. 30.
During her first three years at Nacogdoches, she has led her team to an 85-32 record and three consecutive regional playoff appearances.
