Southland Conference Tournament Information
HUNTSVILLE, TX ? The bracket is complete and the excitement is set to start Wednesday when the top teams in the Southland Conference gather at Don Sanders Stadium on the Sam Houston State campus to decide who will be the SLC representative in the 2008 NCAA Division I baseball national playoffs.
The NCAA playoff berth is the prize for the winner of the Southland Conference post-season baseball tournament. The 2008 edition of the event is historic as, for the first time, the field has been extended to eight teams.
Sam Houston State charged unbeaten through four games to win the 2007 tournament in Natchitoches, LA. A week later, the Kats made national headlines by reaching the NCAA regional finals at Ole Miss, SHSU's best showing ever in the national playoffs.
Just as in both 1996 and 2004 when the Kats won the tournament, Sam Houston State is the number four seed.
Texas-San Antonio, regular season champion for the second year in a row, is number on seed. Lamar is number two, followed by Texas State-San Marcos, Sam Houston, Northwestern State, Texas-Arlington, Southeastern Louisiana, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Wednesday's first round match-ups will be:
Game 1 ? 9 a.m. ? No. 3 Texas State vs. No. 6 UTA
Game 2 ? 12 noon ? No. 2 Lamar vs. No. 7 Southeastern LA
Game 3 ? 4 p.m. ? No. 1 UTSA vs. #8 TAMUCC
Game 4 ? 7 p.m. ? No. 4 Sam Houston vs. No. 5 Northwestern St.
The tournament is a double elimination format with the championship game to be played on Saturday. Thursday's tournament schedule is:
Game 5 ? 9 a.m. ? Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2
Game 6 ? 12 noon ? Loser Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4
Game 7 ? 4 p.m. ? Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2
Game 8 ? 7 p.m. ? Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4
Two tournament ticket packages are available. A reserved pass for a chairback seat for every tournament is $75. A general admission tournament pass is $50.
