Volleyball drops two at UTA Volleyball Invt.

ARLINGTON ? Haley Thomas totaled 15 kills and Carli Kolbe and Anna Ferguson each added 11 as Sam Houston State went five sets with Arkansas-Little Rock before falling to the Trojans on the second day of the Texas-Arlington Holiday Inn volleyball invitational tournament Saturday afternoon.

 

After a three-set loss to New Mexico Friday, the Kats ended play at the event with an 0-2 record to drop to 5-10 for the season.

 

Sam Houston State's Kym Loving was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Loving joined outside hitter Amila Barakovic of Arkansas-Little Rock, middle blocker Christy Driscoll of UTA, outside hitter Justine Farmer of Houston, and outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild of New Mexico on the honor squad.

 

Arkansas-Little Rock, picking up 55 kills as a team, was led by Amila Barakovic with 14 kills. Sam Houston State totaled 53 kills. The Trojans won the match by a 25-20 20-25 25-18 19-25 15-10 score.

 

In the decisive fifth set, the Trojans broke a 2-2 tie by winning six of the next eight points to take an 8-4 lead. The Bearkats never got closer as UALR won seven of the next 13 points to take the match.

 

The first set was tied four times, the last at 14-14. The Trojans finished the set by winning 11 of the final 17 points to go up 1-0.

 

Sam Houston jumped out to a 4-0 led in the second set and never gave up the lead to tie the contest at 1-1 in sets. Arkansas-Little Rock jumped out to a 7-2 margin in the third set and held on the rest of the way for a 2-1 lead in sets.

 

The Kats evened the match again, coming from 9-5 down to win the set.

 

Friday, freshman Carli Kolbe totaled eight kills and senior Anna Ferguson added six to lead Sam Houston State as the Bearkats fell in three sets to New Mexico.

 

The Lobos upped their season record to 9-2 as they defeated Sam Houston 25-22 25-18 25-21. The Bearkats are 5-9 this season.

 

Haley Thomas added five kills and Sarah Hazlewood and Launa McClung each had three as Sam Houston totaled 27 kills for the match. Led by Jeanne Fairchild with 14 kills, the Lobos totaled 35 as a team.

 

Sam Houston jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the first set, but New Mexico bounced back to tie the set seven times, the last at 17-17. The Lobos went on a 4-0 run to go up 21-17. Sam Houston cut the margin to one, 23-22, by two straight kills by Fairchild gave New Mexico a 1-0 lead.

 

The Bearkats also held an early 9-7 lead in the second set, but again after seven ties, New Mexico won seven of the last nine points for the second set.

 

Trying to extend the match to a fourth set, Sam Houston led 21-20 in the third only to see Taylor Hatfield pick up three kills and Amy Wong serve an ace to win the match.
