Soccer blanks Texas Southern 3-0

HOUSTON ? Raquel Bueno, Deana Long and Luana Miessa each scored goals to lead Sam Houston State to a 3-0 NCAA women's soccer victory Sunday afternoon at Texas Southern.

The victory upped Sam Houston State's winning streak to four matches, the longest in six year history of the Bearkat women's soccer program. Each of those victories have been shutouts as the Kat defense has not given up a goal in its last 381 minutes of action.

Sam Houston stands 4-2 for the season, also the best season start in school history.

The Texas Southern match was the first for Sam Houston since a Sept. 7 victory over South Alabama. Hurricane Ike forced the cancelation of the Sept. 21 match at TCU and the contest Sept. 19 with Houston Baptist was rescheduled for this coming Tuesday at Pritchett Field.

“It's been 21 days between games which obviously is very unusual, so it was good to get some of the rust off,” SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. “Texas Southern is a tough place to play with a field that is only 50 yards wide. We got a good effort from the team and it was nice to get some action before we play a challenging opponent like Houston Baptist.”

Miessa upped her season goal total to five with her tally Sunday.

Raquel Bueno scored her second goal of the 2008 season. The senior from Brazil has now moved into a tie for second place in Sam Houston State career goal-scoring. She has 18 career goals, matching Yoanna Garcia who scored 18 from 2004 to 2007. Bueno is two goals away from passing all-time Bearkat leader Kim Brown who tallied 19 goals from 2003 to 2005.

Long, a freshman, scored her first college goal.

Sam Houston State and Houston Baptist will kick off Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Pritchett Field.
