HAMMOND, LA ? Despite a 19-point performance by Leasa Ailshie that included 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc, the Sam Houston State women's basketball team fell to Southeastern Louisiana 82-64 Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
Sam Houston (4-11, SLC 1-1) led by one point, 34-33, at halftime. Southeastern Louisiana (10-6, SLC 2-1) got hot after intermission, going 18-for-30 for 60 percent shooting in the second half to run away from the Bearkats. The Lions out-scored SHSU 49-30 in the second half.
Kristy Carlin led scoring for Southeastern Louisiana with 17 points.
Sam Houston hit 43 percent from the field in the first half (11-of-26), holding the lead eight times in a see-saw opening period. But, in the final 20 minutes, the Kats went cold, shooting only 32 percent from the field (8-of-25).
Whitney Smith scored 16 points for Sam Houston and Britni Martin was also in double figures with 11 points.
The taller Lions out-rebounded the Bearkats 42 to 29 and outscored Sam Houston 36 to 16 in the paint.
Sam Houston's largest lead in the game was five points, 14-9 on a pair of free throws by Smith at the 12:12 mark in the first half. Brittany Brooks gave the Kats a four point lead, 34-30, with a three-point basket at 1:34 before intermission.
Southeastern came out hot to start the second half, starting with a 13-4 run and eventually buildings 15 point lead, 58-43, with 9:36 to play. Sam Houston come never come closer than 10 points the rest of the contest.
