Arlington, Texas - Freshman Britni Martin scored a career high 24 points as she went 6-of-11 from beyond the arc in an 87-73 loss to Texas-Arlington at Texas Hall Saturday afternoon.

Four Mavericks finished in double figures as UTA improved to 3-1 in league play and 5-0 on their home floor. The Mavs moved to 10-8 on the season while the Kats fell to 5-12 overall.

Brittany Brooks added 16 points and Whitney Smith scored 13 for Sam Houston. Erin Dixon finishedwith a team-high 23 points and nine boards for the Mavs.

After four consecutive turnovers in the opening minute of the first half, UT Arlington went on an 16-3 run, giving the Mavs a 13-point lead with 14:16 on the clock.

The Mavericks led by as many as 19 at the 9:25 mark until a three-pointer by Britini Martin brought Sam Houston State in double figures at 27-11 with 9:15 left in the first half.

SHSU's shooting from behind the arc kept them alive as they connected on four of their 10 attempts in the final eight minutes of the first half. The Mavericks headed into halftime with a comfortable 49-33 advantage.

The second half looked similar to the first, as the Mavs powered their way to a 23-point lead with 13:57 left to go, making the score 62-39.

Sam Houston State cut UTA's lead down to 12-points on two occasions, the final time coming at the 6:06 mark but the Mavericks kept their momentum in high gear.

The Mavericks dominated the paint, recording 60 buckets compared to 22 for the Bearkats and out-rebounded SHSU by a 39-31 margin.

UT Arlington finished the game shooting 58.3 percent from the field, 14.3 percent from behind the arc and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.
