THIBODAUX, LA - The Sam Houston volleyball team took only an hour and 10 minutes to dispatch Nicholls in three sets to extend its current winning streak to seven matches Friday night.
The Bearkats won 25-15 25-17 25-14 to up their season record to 15-10 and hold on to first place in the Southland Conference West Division with a 7-1 league mark.
The seven-match winning streak, which includes a non-conference victory over Houston Baptist, is the longest for the Bearkat volleyball program since the 1994 team won 11 in a row.
The 7-1 start in league action is the best for a Bearkat volleyball team since Sam Houston State joined the Southland Conference in 1986. The Bearkats have stood 6-2 after their first eight Southland matches three times, the last in 1994.
Anna Ferguson led Sam Houston with 11 kills. The senior middle blocker made only three errors in 26 attempts. Carli Kolbe and Camille Alfaro each added eight kills.
The Bearkats total 35 kills in 86 attempts for the match while Nicholls had 30 kills. Sam Houston never trailed in the first set. There were four early lead changes in the second and third sets before the Kats pulled away.
Sam Houston's next volleyball action pits the Bearkats against Stephen F. Austin Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
