Soccer falls 4-0 at Texas State

SAN MARCOS - Texas State scored three second half goals to post a 4-0 shut out against Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference women's soccer match Sunday afternoon.

The victory keeps possession of first place in the 2009 Southland Conference race in the Bobcats' paws with one more week to play in the regular season. The Bobcats are 7-0-1 in league play.

With two matches to play, the Bearkats still control their post-season destiny. The top six teams in the final regular season standings earn tournament berths. Sam Houston is in fifth place with a 4-3 record. Three teams that are tied for sixth - Northwestern State, McNeese and Lamar, all at 2-4.

With a victory over Central Arkansas in their next home match, Friday at 7 p.m., or the season finale Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Demons, Sam Houston will earn its third Southland Conference post-season appearance in the seven years of the women's soccer program.

Andrea Grifo put the Bobcats up 1-0 in the 11th minute, scoring from eight yards out on a cross from Jessica Lewis. The Bobcats broke the match open with a goal by Britney Curry in the 58th minute. Taylor Person and Serene Hines added tallies in the 64th and 79th minutes.

Texas St. totaled 19 shots with SHSU goalkeeper Jenny Pence making seven saves. Sam Houston had four shots, two by Shelby Grissett and one each by Emily Jureka and Alex Clifton.
