
Volleyball seniors to be honored Saturday (w/VIDEO)

Three seniors who have played a major role in the Bearkats' success this season take the floor in their final matches at Johnson Coliseum Saturday when the Sam Houston volleyball team plays host to Texas A&M-Corpus Chrsti at 2 p.m.
Anna Ferguson and Katie Phillips have been starters and Shamira Washington has played an important role coming off the bench as Sam Houston has rolled up a 10-match winning streak. The Kats lead the Southland Conference West Division with a 10-1 league mark.
The three seniors will be honored in special pre-match ceremonites.
Ferguson, a first team All-Southland selection last year, has earned two Southland Offensive "Player of the Week" awards in 2009. She was MVP at the Comfort Suites Classic and received all-tournament recognition in two events this year. Ferguson ranks among Sam Houston's all-time top 10 in blocks and in the top 20 in career kills. She is an Academic All-Southland first team with a 3.46 overall GPA as an elementary education major. Saturday she will be appearing in her 103rd match as a Bearkat.
An outside hitter and defensive specialist, Washington is appearing in her 85th match as a Bearkat. Coming into this weekend with 625 career digs, she led Sam Houston's dig leader in 2008. She is a biology major.
A four-year letter-winner as a right side hitter and middle blocker, Phillips is appearing in her 109th match for Sam Houston. She ranks among the all-time top 10 at Sam Houston in blocks with 292 and has totaled 435 career kills. A two-time Academic All-Southland Conference honorable mention selection with a 3.41 overall GPA, she is a psychology major.
Sam Houston State enters the contest with an 18-10 overall season record. The Bearkats' 10-match winning streak is the longest since Sam Houston won 14 in a row in 1993.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi stands 7-17 for the year. The Islanders took Sam Houston to five sets before falling in their first meeting earlier this fall in Corpus Christi.
Volleyball tickets at Johnson Coliseum are $5 for adults and $3 for youth.
