Sam Houston State kicker Miguel Antonio was named Southland Conference football "Special Teams Player of the Week" and Bearkat quarterback Blake Joseph was voted as the Southland's "Offensive Player of the Week" after the pair helped lead SHSU to a 41-0 victory over Saint Joseph's of Indiana last Saturday.
The award marks the second time this season Antonio has earned Southland special team honors. He also was named as the award winner after kicking the winning field goal in a 48-45 victory over North Dakota State.
Last Saturday against the Pumas of Saint Joseph's, the freshman kicker from Lovelady booted field goals of 30 and 27 yards and was perfect on five PAT .
Antonio has connected on all 15 PAT tries this season and has made 5-of-7 field goal attempts.
Joseph accounted for 226 of Sam Houston's 371 total offense yards and three touchdowns in the victory over Saint Joseph's .
The senior from Bryan, Texas (Bryan H.S.), completed 17-of-24 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball four times for 15 yards and a score. The transfer from the University of Houston left the game early in the third quarter but not before running for a 7-yard score.
His touchdown tosses went for 16 and 22 yards. In four games, Joseph is averaging 238.2 yards per game, having completed 61 percent of his passes (64-for-105). He has thrown four touchdown passes against just one interception.
Safety Derrick Boyd of Central Arkansas was named as Southland Conference football "Defensive Player of the Week."
Sam Houston State opens Southland Conference action this Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Bearkats play host to Nicholls. Saturday is the 76th annual Homecoming day for Sam Houston State.
