Volleyball tops A&M-Corpus Christi in five

CORPUS CHRISTI - Anna Ferguson totaled 18 kills including the final two points of the match to lead Sam Houston State to a five-set victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and extend the Bearkats' volleyball winning streak to four Thursday night.

Sam Houston defeated the Islanders 25-21 25-19 18-15 22-25 15-12 to up the Kats' season record to 12-10 and keep SHSU in first place in the Southland Conference West Division with a 4-1 league record.

Ferguson tallied 18 kills with only four errors in 44 attempts. Carli Kolbe and Kim Black also produced double figure kills with 13 and 12, respectively.

Emma Ridley led the Islanders with 27 kills.

Sam Houston produced 71 winners as a team with 53 kills, seven aces and 11 blocks. A&M-Corpus Christi totaled 56 winners.

The Islanders jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, but the Kats fought back to tie the set at 19-19 and eventually win 25-21. Sam Houston never trailed in the second set, but the Islanders jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third set and never trailed as they made the count two sets to one by an 25-18 count.

Sam Houston led 19-15 in the fourth set, but A&M-Corpus Christi won 10 of the next 13 points to force a fifth and deciding set.

With the score tied 10-10, Sam Houston won five of the final seven points to earn the match victory.

Sam Houston State completes its weekend road trip with a Saturday afternoon match at UTSA.
