Nine Bearkats earn All-Southland football honors

Hunter Schmidt, 6-3 304-pound offensive lineman from Alvin, and Jason Madkins, a 6-5 223-pound wide receiver from Mart, both are first team selections on the 2009 All-Southland Conference football team announced Tuesday.
The two seniors along with seven other Bearkats were honored as All-Southland by vote of the league's head football coaches and sports information directors.
Chris Brown, senior defensive end from Texarkana, was a second team selection.
Quarterback Blake Joseph, running back James Aston, offensive lineman R. C. Fairchild, linebackers Luke McCall and Will Henry and punter Michael Capparelli were named as honorable mention selections.
Madkins led Sam Houston with 56 pass receptions for 1,073 yards and eight touchdowns. He is only the seventh Bearkat receiver to gain more than 1,000 yards in a single season.
Schmidt earn All-Southland Conference honors for the third year in a row. He was a second team selection as an offensive guard in 2008 and earn honorable mention honors in 2007.
Brown totaled 32 tackles including three for losses this season. He completes his career as a Bearkat ranked fifth in all-time career quarterback sacks at Sam Houston with 16.
Joseph passed for 2,440 yards in 2009, the sixth highest single season passing total in Sam Houston football history.
Fairchild started every game at offensive tackle for the Bearkats this season. Henry and McCall were both outstanding performers at linebacker, totaling 71 and 65 tackles, respectively for the year. McCall totaled 236 tackles during his career to rank 10th in all-time stops at Sam Houston.
Capparelli averaged 40.0 yards per punt this year.
