Bearkat women trounce McMurry 89-66

Four players, led by Whitney Smith with 22 points, scored in double figures as the Sam Houston State women's basketball team posted an 89-66 exhibition victory over McMurry College of Abilene Monday night.
Brittany Brooks and Chanice Smith each scored 17 points and Khamra Echols added 14 for the Bearkats.
McMurry was led by Halley Stacy with 15 points. The victory was the second in three days for Sam Houston. The Bearkats open the regular season Saturday afternoon at Texas Tech.
Sam Houston never trailed, jumping out to an 11-1 lead. The closest McMurry ever came after that was seven points, 22-15, with 9:11 left to play. By halftime, the Kats had built a 47-28 lead.
Terrah Austin led Sam Houston with seven rebounds. Whitney Smith and Echols each added five boards as the Kats out-rebounded McMurry 37-35.
Like Saturday's contest, the exhibition had its sloppy moments. The two teams combined for 54 turnovers (28 for McMurry and 26 for Sam Houston) and 49 fouls (29 for McMurry and 20 for the Kats). Sam Houston was 22 of 35 at the foul line.
"We're definitely not a finished product yet but we like the progress we're seeing," Sam Houston head coach Brenda Nichols said. "There's just things you see in a real game you don't see in practice and we learned a lot in the past three days. The girls have a great attitude and they're working hard."
The Sam Houston State women's basketball team will play two regular season home games this month, the first on Nov. 17 at 12 noon against the Ole Miss Rebels.
