Jordan Bowersox, starting center for the Sam Houston State University football team, has been named as an Academic All-Southland Conference first team selection for the second year in a row.
Bowersox also is one of four Southland football student-athletes who have been recognized for their achievements in the class room with selection to the 12th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star Team presented by the FCS Athletic Directors Association.
The 26-man Academic All-Southland Conference team is voted upon by the league's head football coaches, academic coordinators and sports information directors. To earn nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or front line reserve, maintain an overall grade point average of 3.2 or higher and have attended class at his university for a minimum of one year prior to the season of competition.
Bowersox was named in November as one of 25 student-athletes who have been voted as Academic All-Region by the College Sports Information Directors Association for the 2009 season. The CoSIDA Academic All-America team is the official national academic honor squad recognized by the NCAA. Members of the All-Region first team are eligible for selection to this year's CoSIDA Academic All-America national team.
Bowersox, a senior finance major from Wichita, KS, holds a 3.73 overall grade point average on Sam Houston's 4.0 scale.
He has been the starting center for Sam Houston State the past two seasons. Last year, he earned first team Academic All-Southland Conference honors and was a second team All-Southland selection after blocking for a Bearkat attack that ranked No. 6 nationally in total offense and No. 4 in NCAA Division I FCS play in passing.
This season, he has started all nine games for an offense that is averaging 349.3 yards per game, blocking for quarterback Blake Joseph who has produced the 10th 2,000-yard plus passing season in school history.
