Gilberto Clavell wins "Player of Week" honors

Sam Houston State center Gilberto Clavell has been named the Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week, the league office announced Monday.
Clavell led Sam Houston to a 107-89 victory at Auburn on Sunday. It was the school's first victory in 13 tries against a team from the Southeastern Conference.
The junior from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico (Florida Air Academy), scored 34 points and grabbed eight rebounds. His point total was the second highest by a Bearkat against an NCAA Division I non-conference opponent and was his third consecutive game with 20 or more points.
Clavell made 14-of-17 shots from the floor and made 6-of-7 shots at the free-throw line. He is scoring 16.2 points per game to rank second for the Bearkats and sixth in the Southland Conference. The award is his first of the season, but is the third by a Bearkat. Sam Houston State senior guards Corey Allmond and Ashton Mitchell also have earned "Player of the Week" honors this season.
Next action for Sam Houston State will be a home game Tuesday night against Florida International University. The Golden Panthers come to Johnson Coliseum for the 7 p.m. contest with a 4-10 record after an 80-70 overtime victory at North Texas Sunday.
Sam Houston State stands 7-3 for the season after the victory over Auburn Sunday.
