Three weeks into the 2009-10 season, the Sam Houston State men's basketball team has positioned itself right where the preseason predictions forecast - among the Southland Conference leaders.
With a 5-3 record, the Bearkats not only rank among the Southland's best in the victories column but Sam Houston also stands atop the league in several team and individual statistics categories.
Corey Allmond, 6-1 senior guard from Oxon Hill, MD, leads the Southland in three-point baskets per game (3.4) and stands fifth in scoring with 16.4 points per contest.
His backcourt partner, 5-1 senior point guard Ashton Mitchell from New Orleans, LA, leads the Southland in assists (5.4) and ranks among the league's top 10 in four other categories. Mitchell stands No. 6 in field goal percentage (.561), No. 8 in steals (1.8), No. 9 in three-point percentage (.467) and No. 10 in scoring (13.6 points).
Five other Bearkats rank in Southland individual statistics categories. Junior guard Lance Pevehouse is No. 3 in steals (1.9), junior forward Josten Crow stands No. 5 in assists (3.9), sophomore guard Drae Murray is No. 7 in assists (3.9), senior forward Preston Brown ranks No. 9 in free throw percentage (.824) and junior post player Gilberto Clavell is No. 10 in field goal percentage (.507).
As a team, the Bearkats lead the Southland in assists per game (22.0), stand second in the league in both scoring (80.5) and steals (9.9) per game and rank third in field goal shooting (.453) and three point shooting (.453).
Two Southland teams have produced six non-conference victories. UTSA is 6-2 while Southeastern Louisiana stands 6-1. Sam Houston's 5-3 record includes wins over Oral Roberts (a team that defeated Oklahoma State and Stanford) and Rider (a squad that defeated Mississippi State).
Next action for the Sam Houston State men's basketball team is a 2 p.m. contest with Ecclesia College of Arkansas Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats will break for finals, then travel to Auburn for a game with the Tigers Sunday Dec. 20. The final pre-Christmas home game for Sam Houston will be Tuesday, Dec. 22, when the Kats play host to Florida International. FIU is coached by former NBA star Isiah Thomas who led Detroit to a pair of league titles.
For the Ecclesia game Saturday afternoon, Sam Houston makes fans an incredible offer - four general admission tickets, four hot dogs, four popcorns and four sodas - all for just $28.
