BATON ROUGE, LA ? Calli Wood's two-run single and RBI double by Ashley Nelson gave the Sam Houston State softball team a three-run six inning to provide the only scoring for the Bearkats in an 8-3 loss to No. 5 Texas A&M on the first day of action at the LSU Tiger Classic at Tiger Field.
The loss dropped Sam Houston to 4-2 for the young 2009 softball season. The Bearkats took the Aggies 14 innings Wednesday night at Bearkat Softball Complex before falling to the two-time NCAA World Series participants 2-1. The 14-inning contest was the longest in Bearkat softball history.
Texas A&M jumped on the Bearkats early Friday, however. The Aggies scored three runs in the first inning and one in both the second and third to jump out to a 5-0 lead. A&M added another run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.
Hailey Wiginton, Alex Survant and Sarah Parich led the Bearkats at the plate, each with two hits.
Morgan Mikulin pitched five and two-thirds innings for SHSU, giving up 10 hits and six runs while walking four and striking out four. Tomi Garrison pitched one and two thirds innings.
Rebecca Arbino went the distance in the pitching circle for A&M, giving up nine hits and striking out four Bearkats. Third baseman Alex Reynolds was 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
Sam Houston State will play Ohio State at 9 a.m. and LSU at 4:15 p.m. Saturday on the second day of the tournament. Tiger Classic semifinals and finals will be held Sunday afternoon.
