The Baylor Bears defeated Sam Houston State 8-1 Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of a non-conference softball series with the Bearkats.
Sam Houston battled the Bears toe-to-toe Friday night, going 10 innings before Baylor pulled out a 2-1 victory. With timely hitting and quality pitching, the Bears overpowered SHSU Saturday 9-4.
The weekend action left Sam Houston with a 1-3 record for the week. Tuesday night Sam Houston defeated Prairie View A&M 5-2 in Huntsville. A schedule Wednesday contest with Houston Baptist was rained out.
Friday, in the 10 inning thriller at Baylor, Kat pitchers Brandi Crnkovic and Morgan Mikulin combined to spread 11 Baylor hits during the contest. Crnkovic went six innings as the starter, giving up five hits and striking out two. Mikulin went three and a third innings.
The Bearkats drew first blood, scoring in the top of the first inning as Hailey Wiginton led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on a single by Mikulin. Baylor limited Sam Houston to four hits the rest of the game. Winning pitcher Whitney Canion struck out 16 Bearkats.
Brette Reagan and Courtney Obert each singled to produce the Bears' winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
Saturday, Sam Houston's Alex Survant and Morgan Mikulin both went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Sam Houston State in the 9-4 loss . Mikulin, Courtney Shoenemann, Mandy Gegen and Amanda Lindsey accounted for the Bearkats' four runs, each with one RBI.
Sunday, three unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning gave Baylor an early lead. Sam Houston got a run back in the fifth inning as Alex Survant singled then scored on a Casie Everitt double. Everitt ended the day going 2-for-3.
Everitt was the top Bearkat hitter of the week. The senior catcher went 4-for-11 with a double and an RBI in her four games to bat .364.
Sam Houston State opens Southland Conference action Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader with Stephen F. Austin.
