HUNTSVILLE ? Irina Sotnikova, Giorgia Pozzan, Peta Taylor and Paty Manzur each won in singles and the Bearkats took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to earn a 5-2 non-conference women's tennis dual match victory over Louisiana-Monroe Sunday afternoon at McAdams Tennis Center.
The victory lifted Sam Houston State's 2009 season dual match record to 2-2.
Sotnikova defeated Lena Satge 6-4, 6-4 at number one. Pozzan knocked off Ana Burjaili at two 6-0 6-2. Taylor won at No. 3 singles over Monica Winkel 6-3 6-4. Manzur was the victor at No. 4 singles over Sharon Makhanya 6-3 6-2.
Sotnikova and Taylor blanked Burjaili and Satge 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and Manzur and Eleonora Kuruc won at No. 3 doubles 8-3.
Sam Houston State now goes on the road for the next two weeks, playing three matches next weekend in El Paso and the University of Houston at UH in two weeks.
“It was nice to build on the success of our victory over Montana State Friday afternoon with this win,” SHSU head coach Jim Giachino said. “This wasn't our best effort of the season but our girls did a good job of dealing with the windy conditions and coming through with another win. These next four matches on the road are very important ones. They will show us the character of this year's team.”
