Three Bearkats named All-Southland

Junior guards Corey Allmond and Ashton Mitchell and senior center Barkley Falkner of Sam Houston State have been named to the 2009 All-Southland Conference men's basketball squad.
The three players led the Bearkats to the Southland Conference West Division championship and an 18-11 record during the 2009 season. Sam Houston State is the No. 3 in the State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament to be played in the Merrell Center in Katy starting Thursday.
Allmond is a first team selection. Mitchell was named second team All-SLC. Falkner is an honorable mention All-SLC selection.
Allmond, a 6-1 transfer from Howard College, and Mitchell, a 5-11 three-year letterman from New Orleans, make up the highest scoring back court ever at Sam Houston State.
With Allmond averaging 15.4 points and Mitchell 12.6, the pair are combining for 28.0 points per contest.
Since Sam Houston moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 1987, there has been only one other season when the Kats had two guards scoring in double figures -- in 2006 when Chris Jordan (14.3) and Jejuan Plair (12.5) led the team from the perimeter.
Mitchell leads the SLC and ranks No. 6 nationally in assists (6.8 per game). Allmond ranks No. 11 in NCAA Division I men's basketball with .438 three-point accuracy. He has set a new Sam Houston season record with 96 three point baskets, breaking the old record of 93 by Derrick Williams in 1988.
Barkley Falkner, a 6-8 senior from Oxford, MS, has averaged 8.6 points and 8.1 rebounds this season. Last year, he averaged 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds as a reserve. He ranks No. 4 in the Southland in rebounding.
Allmond has led the team in 14 games including 11 games of 20 or more points. He scored 24 points vs. Schreiner and 23 points at Texas Tech to become only the fourth player in SHSU history to score 20-or-more points in his first two games as a Kat.
Mitchell scored 36 points in the double overtime victory at Lamar, the second highest point total by a Bearkat against an NCAA Division I opponent. He also set a school record in the Lamar contest making 22 of 27 free throws.
