First place UTA edges Kat tennis 4-3

HUNTSVILLE ? Texas-Arlington won the doubles point and the number four, five and six singles to escape with a 4-3 Southland Conference women's tennis dual match victory over Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon at the McAdams Tennis Center.

 

The Mavericks remain undefeated (6-0) in Southland Conference action to remain atop the league standings. UTA is 12-4 for the year. Sam Houston stands 7-5 for the season and 2-2 in conference action.

 

Irina Sotnikova, who ranks No. 134 in NCAA Division I women's tennis this season, upped her 2008-09 singles record to 20-1 with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Monika Hadvigerova at No. 1 singles. Sotnikova and Peta Taylor won the No. 1 doubles pro set 8-7. The two seniors stand 21-2 in doubles this season.

 

Giorgia Pozzan def. Daiana Negreanu at No. 2 singles and Taylor won over Klara Jagosava at No. 3 to provide the Bearkats their other two points.

 

Katarina Micochova came back from a 4-0 decifit in the first set to defeat Paty Manzur 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 in the decisive singles match.

 

“UTA has an outstanding team but we had some people step up today and make them battle for it,” Sam Houston State head coach Jim Giachino said. “We came up a little short today. If we get another crack at them in the post-season tournament, it could be anybody's match.”

 

Sam Houston will host Texas State-San Marcos at 11 a.m. at the McAdams Courts Sunday in another Southland Conference matchup.
