Sam Houston State has one more opportunity to nail down their first Southland Conference post-season tournament berth since 2004. The Bearkats must defeat Texas State-San Marcos in their 2 p.m. meeting on the road Sunday.
The Bearkats have lost 22 consecutive Southland Conference road games. Their last road SLC win was in 2007 over McNeese State in Lake Charles.
Sunday's game will be broadcast live on KHVL 1490 AM and www.gobearkats.com.
Sam Houston was on the verge of their first SLC road win in three years Wednesday, but Demetria White scored a lay-up with 12 seconds to go for the winning basket in an 85-82 Northwestern State women's basketball victory over Sam Houston State at Natchitoches, LA.
Ray Alexander, who scored 18 points for Sam Houston, had tied the contest for the sixth time with a free throw with 30 seconds remaining to make the score 82-82.
Sam Houston State and the Bobcats met earlier this season in Huntsville. Led by Alexander with 15 points, the Kats defeated Texas State-San Marcos 78-68 Jan. 21. The victory was the first for Sam Houston over the Bobcat women since 2002.
Four other Bearkats scored in double figures with Britni Martin scoring 14, Bre Agnew and Brittany Brooks 12 apiece and Whitney Smith with 11.
The game was tied five times, the last at 36-36 with 16:02 to play. Sparked by a three point basket by Leisa Ailshie at the 14:32 mark, the Bearkats went on a 15-2 run. Martin put the Kats up 51-38 on a jumper with 12:22 to play.
Sam Houston's biggest lead was 17 points, 67-50, at 5:55 on a lay-up by Martin.
