Softball takes doubleheader from Demons

HUNTSVILLE ? Whitney Wilson hit a walk-off double in the eighth inning to give Sam Houston a 1-0 win in the first game and Hailey Wiginton hit a solo home run for the go-ahead tally in a 6-3 win in the nightcap as the Bearkats swept a Southland Conference softball doubleheader from Northwestern State Saturday night.

The victories upped Sam Houston to 11-10 for the season and 5-3 in Southland Conference action. Northwestern State dropped to 2-18 for the year and 0-8 in league action.

With one out in the first extra inning of the opening contest, Hailey Wiginton and Calli Wood each singled to set up the game-winner by Wilson.

Morgan Mikulin (4-3) tossed a two-hitter to pick up her second shutout of the season. Mikulin struck out 10 Demons, facing just 27 batters. Mikulin also was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Demon starter Kelee Grimes held the Kats scoreless for seven innings allowing just four hits and striking out four. Leigh Appenfeller (1-4) pitched the final inning to take the loss.

Wiginton hit a solo home run down the right field line in the fifth inning to give Sam Houston a 3-2 lead in the second game. Casie Everitt scored the first Kat run, getting on base on an error, moving to third on a single by Janaye Richardson then scoring on a ground out. Back-to-back doubles by Wood and Mandy Gegen gave the Kats their second run in the fourth. The Demons scored runs in the third and fifth innings.

Kendra Spivey had an RBI single and Wilson added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Brandi Crnkovic (5-5) picked up the victory in the nightcap with four strike outs in six innings. Mikulin produced her first save of the 2009 season, getting all three outs in the final inning.

The Kats and the Demons will meet in the third game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
