Cougars sweep doubleheader from softball

HUNTSVILLE ? The University of Houston swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Sam Houston State as the Cougars won 3-2 and 3-1 Wednesday at Bearkat Softball Complex.

 

Second baseman Haley Valis slammed a double to left center field to score two runs in the first extra inning in a 3-1 come-from-behind victory in the first game. Right fielder Laurie Wagner blasted RBI doubles in both the first and third innings to put Houston ahead in the second game. Designated hitter Baillie Lott added a run-scoring single in the sixth inning.

 

With the sweep, Houston ups its season record to 15-16. Sam Houston State drops to 14-17 for the year.

 

Sam Houston took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the first game as designated hitter Morgan Mikulin blasted her first home run of 2009 over the center field fence.

 

The Cougars tied the contest 1-1 with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning. First baseman Melissa Gregson scored center fielder Katie Bush with a single to left field. Bush led off the sixth with a single and reached second on an error.

 

Catcher Casie Everitt's RBI single cut the margin to 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Everitt scored Brown who walked.

 

Baillie Lott (7-6) was the winning pitcher for UH, spreading six hits over eight innings and striking out five. Brandi Crnkovic (6-8) was the loser, also giving up six hits while striking out eight Cougars.

 

Shortstop Hailey Wiginton singled in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. She scored Kendra Spivey who singled, reached second on an error and third on a passed ball.

 

Another Cougar double resulted in a UH run in the sixth inning. Catcher Elaina Nordstrom doubled and scored on a single by Baillie Lott.

 

Lindsey Olson (1-1) was the winning Cougar pitcher in the nightcap, limiting the Bearkats to three hits in four and a third innings. Mikulin (6-6) was the losing pitcher for SHSU.

 

The Sam Houston softball team heads to Texas-Arlington for a three-game Southland Conference series Saturday and Sunday.
