Chanice Smith, a 5-9 guard from Timberview High School in Mansfield, has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Sam Houston State and play women's basketball for Coach Brenda Nichols.
Smith averaged 10.1 points per game for Coach Candi Harvey, helping lead Timberview to the Texas Class 4A state finals in only the school's fifth year of basketball. The Wolves produced a 36-4 record in 2009. Smith was selected to the Class AAAA All-State Tournament team and was a All-District and All-Region selection as well.
"Chanice is a tremendous athlete and a great person. She will fit right into our program," Nichols said. "She comes from a quality program and possesses great fundamentals. She also is an outstanding student with numerous academic honors."
Smith has been selected to play in the TGCA and DFW High School All-Star games. She is a two-time All-District and three-time Academic All-District and was named Academic All-State as a senior.
She has been a starter on Timberview teams that have rolled up 30 or more victories each of the last three seasons.
Smith also earned All-District honors in volleyball and softball. She was named the volleyball team's "Defensive Player of the Year" and "Hitter of the Year" in 2008 after leading the Wolves to their third district championship.
Smith is the third signee for Sam Houston women's basketball. Earlier this week, Sequeena Thomas of Allentown, PA, and Clarke Davis of Mansfield inked letters with the Bearkat women.
