The Sam Houston State Bearkats put on the full pads earlier this week and are about ready to start hitting each other in more of a game setting.
The Bearkats will hold an 80-play scrimmage on Saturday morning, their first of the spring. The Bearkats will hold two sets of 25-play scrimmages and then break for some work in the kicking game. They then will have a goal line scrimmage and then run some plays coming out of the end zone.
The biggest change for the players has been dealing with some of the new assignments on the coaching staff, including a change at defensive coordinator. Scott Stoker, the former head coach at Northwestern State, is now in charge of the defense and this is the opportunity for everyone on that side of the ball to make an impression.
“We have a lot of good battles taking place on both sides of the ball this spring,” said head coach Todd Whitten. “But when you look at having a new coordinator on the defensive side, I think that has forced all of those guys to really step it and show what they can do.”
The scrimmage is set to get underway at around 10 a.m. and will be finished by 11:30 a.m. It is the first of two Saturday scrimmage this spring. They will go again on April 18. The annual Orange-White Game will be held on April 25.
All scrimmages and practices are held at Bowers Stadium and are open to the public.
