Tennis topples SFA 6-1 Wednesday

HUNTSVILLE ? Sam Houston State won all three doubles pro sets and took five of the six singles matches to defeat Stephen F. Austin 6-1 in a Southland Conference women's tennis dual match Wednesday afternoon at McAdams Tennis Center.

 

Irina Sotnikova, Peta Taylor, Paty Manzur and Eleonora Kuruc won in straight sets at No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles. Giorgia Pozzan lost her first set at No. 2 singles but bounced back to win in three.

 

Tatiana Smolnikova picked up the only point for the Lumberjacks, defeating Stasa Vujosevic at No. 6 singles.

 

Sotnikova ran her 2008-09 season singles record to 24-1 with the victory. Taylor stands 21-6. The two seniors rank as Sam Houston State's all-time “winningest” singles players, Sotnikova with 84 career victories and Taylor with 59.

 

Sotnikova and Taylor also won at No. 1 doubles. The pair are 25-2 in doubles action this year and rank as Sam Houston's top all-time pairing with a 51-9 record the last two years.

 

Sam Houston State (10-6, SLC 5-3) plays again Friday at 3 p.m. when the Bearkats play host to Central Arkansas. The Kats currently are tied for four place in the Southland Conference standings with Texas State-San Marcos and Northwestern State.

 

Sam Houston has three matches remaining on its regular season schedule, hosting Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana next week. The top eight teams in the final regular season standings earn berths in the SLC post-season tournament to be held in Corpus Christi April 24-26.
