Four Sam Houston State Bearkat baseball players earned All-Southland Conference honors in 2009, the Southland league office announced Monday.
Braeden Riley, sophomore second baseman from Woodville, was a first team selection.
Nick Zaleski, senior first baseman/outfielder from Sugar Land and freshman pitcher Sean Weatherford from Bryan were named to the All-SLC second team honor squad.
Senior catcher Mark Wyatt from Houston was a third team selection.
Riley, who has led NCAA Division I baseball in total hits for much of the 2009 season, hit .388 this year. His season hit total stands at 99 going into the Southland Conference post-season tournament Wednesday. The school record is 103 by Keith Stein in 2007. Riley posted 11 doubles, two triples and two home runs this year. He had 33 multiple hit games and, at one point in the season, put together a 16-game hitting streak.
Zaleski is the Bearkats' batting average leader this season with a .421 mean, the highest batting average ever for a Kat baseball player since Sam Houston moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 1987. Zaleski has totaled 20 doubles, eight home runs and 54 RBIs this season.
Weatherford compiled a 7-5 record on the mound along with a 3.84 earned run average. In 65 and two thirds innings in 20 games this year he totaled 66 strike outs.
Wyatt led Sam Houston State with 12 home runs this season. For the year, Wyatt hit .333 with 16 doubles and 50 RBIs.
Sam Houston State will be the No. 7 seed in the Southland post-season tournament in Corpus Christi. The Kats open play at 12 noon Wednesday against No. 2 seed Southeastern Louisiana.
