Sam Houston State senior Nick Zaleski signed a free agent contract with the Toronto Blue Jays this week.
Zaleski led the Kats this past season, hitting .419 for the year. That mark set a new single-season record for the best batting average since the Kats became a Division I program passing the mark of .416 set by Kelly Eddlemon in 1999.
He also led the club in doubles (22) and RBIs (57). The doubles mark is the fifth best in school history. He finished the season one hit shy of the century mark, the fourth-best mark for a Bearkat.
Over the last three seasons, Zaleski has been an integral part of the turnaround the Sam Houston State program has enjoyed. He has been a three-year starter on three consecutive NCAA Tournament teams for the Bearkats.
In his four-year, 200-game career, Zaleski hit .337, with 239 hits which puts him fifth on the all-time hit list at SHSU. He is also fifth all-time in RBIs with 154. His 50 doubles in his career are tied for third-most. Zaleski also had 21 home runs for the Bearkats.
