Sam Houston State's 2009 volleyball recruiting class has been ranked among the top 90 in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com.
The web site annually ranks the top recruiting classes for NCAA Division I volleyball. The Bearkats were listed as an honorable mention selection (65th-90th).
Sam Houston State adds six freshmen to the team this fall. Joining the Bearkat squad will be outside hitters Camille Alfaro, Kaylee Hawkins and Kelli Stewart, middle blocker Becky Swann, setter Michelle Miller and defensive specialist Jamie Haas. All six earned All-District honors in high school.
Alfaro ranked No. 3 in the San Antonio area in kills last year for Marshall. Haas helped lead Deer Park to a 25-15 record and the state playoffs. Hawkins was a front line player for Dickinson's 32-6 state playoff squad last fall. Miller played on Round Rock teams that produced a 44-1 record in district play the past four years. Stewart, a transfer from TCU, took Magnolia to 2008 Texas Class 4A state tournament. Swann totaled 564 kills for Buda Hays's 27-17 district champions as a senior.
The six freshmen join a group of eight returning letterwinners that includes three starters from Sam Houston's 2008 squad that finished fourth in the Southland Conference West Division with a 9-7 league record.
“We're excited to have our program receive national recognition and we're looking forward to start getting ready for the 2009 season when the players report in August,” SHSU head coach Brenda Gray said.
